EVO considers not only the children of the area, but the interns involved in our programs as well as 'seeds of hope' that are being watered and nurtured to become wholesome individuals of the future. We value the serving hearts of our interns in our various programs, and are also excited to see them grow in their training and experience with the children.

Summer Day Camp
We are recruiting 8 - 10 college and high school interns to run our Summer Day Camp 2008. This camp will run for 6 weeks, from 8:30am to 3:30pm Monday to Friday. Children ages 6 - 14 years participate in this camp.

Summer interns will have the opportunity to:

  • Live in the inner city of Pittsburgh
  • Be involved in a cross-cultural ministry
  • Reach out to the young people of the area
  • Live and grow in community for six weeks, serving and being served
  • Share the Good News of Jesus Christ with children and youth

Interns will receive an experienced-based education and training in ministry, plus a compensation that includes a $1,500-$2,000 partial stipend, lodging and board. Interns will live in community in a 12-bedroom house with separate sleeping areas for guys and girls. Kitchen and living space are available. Interns are responsible and encouraged to help raise their financial support through friends, home churches, and other sources.

Group Volunteers
We welcome groups from college or high school who want to come serve at EVO for a limited period of time. Opportunities to help out abound in our after-school, Kidz Camp, and Summer Day Camp program.

In March 2005, a group of students from Carnegie Mellon University spent a week during their Spring Break to participate in an Urban Plunge organized by Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. The plunge was headquartered in Friendship House. The students learned about ministry in the inner city and served many children in the after-school and Kidz Camp programs.

Other groups have come with the goal of a missions experience with the purpose to serve. Many of these groups have blessed EVO with many hours of physical labor to improve our amenities in order for our ministry to function better.

The following group of 12 young men from the western suburbs of Chicago and Life Church came to
Pittsburgh for 5 days to offer their services as they worked on the church and Friendship House. Activities included: tiling the entry way, refinishing the 2 sets of double doors, cleaning up the hedge bushes in the front, installing hot water heaters in the men's and women's bathroom, and painting the exterior of Friendship House.

Amber Thompson (left bottom) was an intern for the Summer Camp in 2005 who worked with the pre-school aged kids.

What did the Camp mean to you?
I loved the camp and I loved the kids. The life experience that I gained from loving the kids and ealing with them day after day is so valuable. I'd say that it was transformational!

What were the best things about the Camp?
The camp was run really well. I loved hte set-up. The breakfast, the worship, the educational pieces, and the whole structure was a real benefit to the kids. Oh! And the field trips were great!

What stayed with you after the camp was over?
The friendships I made with the other interns. We all are keeping in touch. It was a real growth thing for me to learn to get along with everyone ... but we all ended up so close! It was like that with the kids, too. I got to experience so many different personalities in the kids. I had to learn how to interact with each type.
