A little bit of our history. Seeds of Hope Church was started in the fall of 2002 by Pastor John Paul Chaney and his wife Marilyn. Pastor Chaney is an ordained Episcopal Minister and he and his wife have been in full-time ministry for 10 years. John Paul and Marilyn relocated from the Chicago area in the fall of 2000 as they felt called to come to Pittsburgh to enter a new phase of ministry. They purchased the old Immaculate Conception Rectory on Friendship Avenue with two of their five sons as they served at Shepherd’s Heart Episcopal Church, an inner city Church that serves the homeless and poor. They have three sons who still live in the Chicagoland area. The oldest is 28 and married with three children. In the summer of 2002, Seeds of Hope partnered with Pittsburgh Leadership Foundation to serve the children of Garfield, Friendship, Bloomfield and East Liberty through their summer day camp program. This camp was six weeks long, 8 hours a day and serviced 40 kids the first year. Once the camp was over, a similar fall program was started on Saturday nights throughout the year. It was at this time that they also started meeting as a church. Another camp was held during the summer of 2003 having over 50 children. Again, a similar fall program was offered but on Tuesday evenings. A third summer camp was held in 2004 with over 70 children enrolled. During this time, the church continued to meet on Saturday nights and has grown to an average attendance of 60 people. It was during the summer of 2004 that Earthen Vessels Outreach was started, so that the vision of Seeds of Hope to reach the “at risk” population would continue to grow. Throughout the summer of 2004, many of the parents expressed an interest in an after-school program. Earthen Vessels Outreach received a grant to run an after-school program that has since begun in January 2005. This is a five day a week program from 2:30-5:00 p.m. Our emphasis is academically based as we stress excellence through the completion of homework and life long learning. This occurs through personal tutors, the use of computers, individualized developed curriculum and continual correspondence with the local schools. An optional Bible Based program, called Kidz
Camp is offered on Tuesday evenings, after a meal that is served at
5:00. The Christian based Kidz Camp takes place between 5:30-7:00 P.M. |
